News Trust Plummets and Audiences Shift to Digital Platforms

Public confidence in traditional journalism witnessed a steep decline, and audiences migrated heavily toward social media spaces. According to the 2026 report of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, trust in Philippine news plummeted by ten points, pulling the national average down to twenty-eight percent. This sharp fall was recorded as the steepest among all forty-eight markets surveyed by the institute. Unless strategic interventions and media literacy campaigns are immediately spearheaded by state agencies, e.g., the Presidential Communications Office and the Department of Education, the volatile digital environment would likely result to a continued reliance on unverified digital platforms.

Concerns were raised regarding the safety and integrity of the press, as sustained attacks on the media and political polarization were identified as primary catalysts for the decline. From the administration of former president Rodrigo Duterte to the current term of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the public sphere has been marred by intense disinformation, red-tagging and lawfare. Consequently, audiences have been forced to cope up with a fragmented landscape where professional reporting competes against highly partisan content. It was noted that this environment has disproportionately affected lower-income demographics, where overwhelming digital informations and varied political imageries often obscure factual reporting.

The Shift to Social Media and Content Creators

A massive transition from traditional broadcast television to platform-led consumption was observed from 2025 to 2026. While television usage dropped to forty-two percent, social media networks grew exponentially, with platforms such as Facebook, YouTube and TikTok dominating the digital space.

Furthermore, a heavy reliance on independent creators was documented by the institute. A significant segment of the population now consume news through digital influencers rather than established journalists. If audiences continue to favor entertaining digital personalities over rigorously fact-checked newsrooms, the broadcast sector would be forced to completely recalibrate its approach. It is imperative that the government takes definitive responsibility to ensure that the public is adequately equipped to navigate this evolving landscape without abandoning truth, objectivity and institutional accountability.
