Official state ceremonies and security

The National Historical Commission of the Philippines is spearheading the official state ceremonies. Traditional flag-raising activities and wreath-laying ceremonies would be held at Rizal Park in Manila and the historic Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit. At the Quirino Grandstand, the annual Parada ng Kalayaan is scheduled to take place, where civic groups, military personnel and government employees are expected to march. Extensive security preparations are being undertaken by the national police to cope up with the anticipated influx of spectators along the 2km parade route.

Heritage walks and local bazaars

To foster patriotism among the urban middle class, the Department of Tourism organized a series of cultural activities. The department heavily promoted historical exhibits at the Manila Clock Tower Museum, which feature rare colonial furnitures and vivid historical imageries from the revolution. Heritage walks through the storied districts of Binondo, Escolta, Intramuros and along the Pasig River would also be conducted to educate the youth. For holiday shoppers, local brand bazaars and craft fairs are set up in Quezon City and Araneta City, highlighting the creativity of Filipino artisans.

OPM concerts and entertainment

The local entertainment scene is likewise gearing up for the long weekend. The Musikalayaan concert series will feature open-air performances at Rizal Park. Meanwhile, major Original Pilipino Music concerts are slated to happen in Manila and Pasay, including a highly anticipated team-up of top local artists. Pop culture enthusiasts are especially excited for the nation's premier girl group Bini, whose nationwide tour officially kicks off this June at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Provincial festivities and beach parties

In the province, local government units are preparing their own unique programs. Beach festivals, live performances and sundown parties are being organized in resort destinations, e.g., Boracay, catering to domestic tourists taking advantage of the long weekend.

Global diaspora celebrations

The spirit of freedom is also celebrated vigorously by the Filipino diaspora. A prominent solon commended overseas Filipino workers for keeping the country's heritage alive, noting that global events serve as a beacon of national pride. In New York, the massive Philippine Independence Day Parade on Madison Avenue happens Sunday, June 7. Similar grand parades, food festivals and cultural fairs are being finalized by diaspora communities in Toronto, San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles, Madrid and various cities in Germany.

Unless unforeseen weather disturbances enter the Philippine area of responsibility, the nationwide commemoration is poised to be a resounding success, proving that the nation’s democratic ideals remain vibrant.
