Three students were killed and seven others were wounded when a fatal shooting erupted inside the San Jose National High School in Tacloban City on Monday, June 22. Two minor suspects aged 14 to 15 have been taken into custody following the tragic incident, Police Brig. Gen. Jason Capoy, director of the Philippine National Police Regional Office 8, announced during a press briefing.

Allegations were made that the two suspects, who are both Grade 9 students, had specific individuals in mind, although the three fatalities—two female and one male—did not appear to be the intended targets. The victims were found in two classrooms where gunfire reached and struck several furnitures. If the preliminary informations are proven accurate by investigators, strict accountability must be exacted, unless the school administration can demonstrate immediate compliance with national safety mandates.
The Department of Education released a formal statement designating the tragedy as a "high-alert situation" while urging the public to respect the privacy of the affected minors. Medical and psychosocial support are being provided by the department to help the campus community cope up with the trauma. School shootings are considered rare in the country, but such incidents inevitably result to public alarm and demand institutional responsibility. A group of responding officers who arrived at the scene have secured the premises to prevent further casualties.
The suspects reportedly utilized a pistol and a .38cal revolver. Capoy stressed that the police is actively tracing the firearms to determine if they belonged to active-duty personnel, e.g., military staff or police officers. Administrative and criminal charges would be filed against any official found to own the weapons. Because the heavily armed minors have no prior criminal records, they would be turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development. The agency will take full custody of the shooters. One suspect was caught within the campus, while the second was traced to nearby Barangay 87, where a group of residents who joined the search have located his hiding place.

The recent violence brings renewed attention to the education agency's security measures, which were initially tightened after a fifteen-year-old female student was shot inside a classroom at Sta. Rosa Integrated School in Nueva Ecija in the year two thousand twenty-five. Following a string of campus incidents in August of that year, stricter policies were ordered nationwide. These protocols included a total ban on firearms, bag inspections, controlled entry points and a more visible security presence.
