The Tab Baldwin era in Katipunan has come to an abrupt end as the Ateneo de Manila University accepts the resignation of its head coach and team manager, and steps are being taken to address the tragedy that claimed the lives of student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.
Allegations were made regarding the safety protocols of the basketball program after the fatal drowning incident during a routine training camp in Dipaculao, Aurora. This tragedy has resulted to an extensive institutional review, as the academic community urgently tries to cope up with the immense public scrutiny from alumni, faculty and government officials.
During a solemn press conference at the Faber Hall, President Roberto Yap announced that sweeping reforms would be implemented to rebuild the athletic structures, especially if the university is to regain the trust of the public. The university president confirmed that all regular athletic activities would be suspended indefinitely as a mark of respect.
"A change of leadership is necessary to ensure a full integrity of our sports programs and our safety protocols," Yap stated, emphasizing that the school is not evading accountability. "We must look inward, examine our systems and rebuild the structures of our athletic programs."
The team is currently left with only its assistant coaches after former team manager Epok Quimpo also stepped down. Former coach Tab Baldwin started his tenure in two thousand sixteen and led the squad to multiple championships. Expectations were exceptionally high for the roster this year, particularly with the addition of the 193cm tall Baterbonia, an up-and-coming high school star.
However, their athletic calendar has now been completely halted. The school has formally withdrawn from the Filoil Preseason Cup and cancelled its scheduled participation in Japan's University Top League, which was set from August 12 to 14.
Regarding their mother league, Yap noted that a final decision on their UAAP Season 89 participation would be announced soon, pending internal evaluations.
Subpoenas were already issued by local authorities, and independent investigations are being conducted by the Commission on Higher Education. The agency noted that involved sports personalities were a no-show during Monday's initial inquiry. The university stressed that it will fully cooperate with the department to ensure fairness, truth and justice.
To support the grieving relatives, Ateneo has offered comprehensive material assistance, covering travel expenses, accommodations and additional furnitures needed for the memorial services held at the campus chapels. The administration vowed to maintain this moral and financial support for at least the next three hundred sixty-five days, ensuring that the bereaved families, e.g., the Baterbonias from Agusan del Sur, receive proper care during this agonizing period.
