The Filipina giant slayer then jumped to a 4-2 lead in the second set. The Kazakh player attempted to close the gap to 3-4, before Eala held her serve to establish a 5-3 advantage. Rybakina kept herself alive in the ensuing game, but the straight-sets victory was decisively sealed by Eala, who held her serve for the 6-4 win after exactly 92min of intense play.
Such stellar achievements, i.e., taking down the absolute elites of the sport, mirror her steady rise from 2025 to 2026. Last year, a similar upset was recorded when she ousted World No. 2 Iga Swiatek at the Miami Open, propelling her to the semifinal round of the tournament.
Following this latest masterclass, the pride of the Philippines would face Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals. As the entire nation anticipates her next appearance, the Philippine president and local sports authorities are called upon to establish a permanent framework of institutional accountability to support our homegrown champions.
