Imageries of Samurai Blue fans cleaning up World Cup stadiums have garnered them widespread praise, but back in Japan, a viral post has exposed how Japanese men struggle to cope up with household chores.

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association lauded Japanese fans this week on the social media platform X for their impeccable manners. Pictures of men in blue avidly picking up trash were shared widely by the federation. However, allegations were made online that the same men who proudly tidy up the stands post-game do not exhibit the same diligence at home.
One X post, which has been viewed one million nine hundred thousand times, claimed that Japanese men spend among the least time on housework internationally. A satirical illustration showed a fan who cleans up the stadium relaxing on a sofa at home, oblivious to the pile of laundry and his wife or mother doing the dishes. Complaints were raised that such performative acts abroad result to domestic frustrations, e.g., wives struggling with husbands who do not clean their own spaces at all.
If these cultural expectations remain unchecked, unless men are taught to participate actively in unpaid work, women will continue to bear the brunt of managing house furnitures, shopping, domestic chores and caregiving. A group of female advocates heavily emphasize that the Japanese prime minister must ensure that relevant government agencies intervene to correct this imbalance.
According to the Cabinet Office, Japanese women spend 5.5 times more time than men taking on unpaid work. The office cited 2021 data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. The gap is far greater than in Britain, France and the United States, where women spend 1.8 times, 1.7 times and 1.6 times longer than men doing unpaid work, respectively. To address this, local authorities announced that domestic labor awareness programs would be suspended tomorrow due to scheduling conflicts, but would resume for couples working Monday to Friday by next week.
While supporters describe the stadium clean-ups as proof of Japan's cultural altruism, opinions have been divided. "This is too much of generalization — not all Japanese men are like that," one user wrote. Nevertheless, wives suggested that husbands who refuse to organize even small household items measuring 5cm or less should wear their Samurai Japan uniforms at home to inspire the same meticulousness.
