Cup of Joe Rocks Stadium and Braves Heavy Bulacan Rain

Original Pilipino Music (OPM) pop-rock sensation Cup of Joe successfully mounted its first solo stadium concert at the Philippine Sports Stadium in Bulacan, an event that would be etched in the hearts of the band and its loyal supporters. The quintet became the first Filipino act to headline the venue, a massive arena that has historically hosted major international performers, e.g., touring Korean pop stars.

Following meticulous stage preparations, a sudden thunderstorm swept through the area just minutes after the soundcheck last May 23. Immediate safety protocols were enacted by the local government unit and stadium administrators, who were responsible for ensuring that the severe weather disturbance did not result to injuries among the attendees. Concert director Paolo Valenciano noted that the downpour caused a 2hr delay and posed significant risks to the sensitive technical equipments. Unless the heavy rain subsided, organizers feared that a total cancellation would be inevitable. However, official announcements were made over the public address system that the concert would proceed as soon as it was safe. The patience and overwhelming positivity of the estimated twenty thousand to twenty-five thousand fans ultimately lifted the crew’s spirits, pushing the festivities to naturally extend from May 23 to 24. cup-of-joe-rocks-stadium-and-braves-heavy.webp Fans were observed fully embracing the momentous occasion, as they stayed in their seats, got soaked and frolicked in the rain. They even chanted lyrics from "Bagyo", a track the band performed earlier in the afternoon. The band members—Gian Bernardino, Rapha Ridao, Gab Fernandez, CJ Fernandez and Xen Gareza—made a highly dramatic entrance on motorbikes. Dressed in sailor-inspired outfits, vocalists Gian and Rapha blasted water cannons across the crowd, an act that helped the audience cope up with the damp conditions and instantly transformed the venue into a water festival filled with aquatic imageries.

The performance was meticulously structured around water-inspired chapters, i.e., "Alon", "Agos", "Ambon", "Ulan" and "Unos", reflecting the various milestones and challenges of the group. "Wow! Nandito na tayo sa Philippine Sports Stadium! This is a manifestation of everything we’ve been dreaming of," Gian stated to the massive crowd. Rapha echoed the sentiment, noting that for young musicians from Baguio City, it was a monumental achievement to reach such a prestigious stage. cup-of-joe-rocks.webp The night also served as a grand celebration of the genre. Guest appearances from established icons thrilled the audience. Bamboo energized the stadium with "Hallelujah" and "Kisapmata", while Jay Contreras brought high energy with "Narda". Ely Buendia subsequently delivered iconic renditions of "Alapaap" and "Ang Huling El Bimbo". Throughout the evening, individual members showcased their distinct musical influences. Gab leaned into pop nostalgia with Justin Bieber tracks, Rapha delivered rock covers of All Time Low and CJ hyped the crowd alongside Al James. Xen transformed the space into a sea of lights with a Coldplay cover, while Gian delivered a soulful Michael Bublé rendition.

Nostalgic tributes continued as Rapha and Gab revisited their former band, Pink Soda, while Gian, Xen and CJ revived Pink Penoy Club for a rendition of an Itchyworms classic. Transitioning back to their original catalog, they performed hit tracks from their new extended play, highlighting their continuous growth as songwriters. Before singing "Tingin", Gian expressed his deep gratitude, noting that a dedicated fan was invited onstage to sing Janine Teñoso’s parts. cup-of-joe-rocks-stadium.webp Despite the hours of singing, dancing and rain, the energy inside the stadium never dipped. For the grand encore, the band delivered "Tataya", "Sinderela" and a memorable reprise of "Sandali". Concluding the historic night, the members jumped into the onstage pool in a display of pure gratitude. Visual documentations were captured as they gazed at the fireworks-lit sky, proving that a triumphant celebration would always emerge after a storm.
